Daily Schedule

May 24th

8:00 am - meet at workshop location

1. Discussion on yurts
We will explore the many different types of yurts, design features of the structure, sizes, construction methods and the specific assembly details about how to build a yurt. Raw materials can come from many resources such as new lumber, reclaimed wood, salvage lumber, recycled lumber, tree saplings and we can even produce lumber on site with a portable sawmill when saw logs are available. Canvas and coverings are always an important topic. We will discuss the benefits of each and how to effectively apply these skills for different individual situations.

2. Setting up our yurt camp
Learning the art of setting up a yurt will be the first step in this yurt building process. Before any woodwork begins we will set up the yurts that we will be staying in. The sequence of events required to set up a yurt and break it down (to transport or for storage) is as important as knowing how to make the parts. We cover all the little tips and tricks that make setting up a yurt easy. This step will also help to become familiar with all the various parts. Understanding the importance of each component will help when it's time to make them.

May 25th

Yurt lattice wall - Preparation and Assembly
Although participants will not be using a table saw or machinery, we will learn how to cut lumber to get the most from the different types of wood available. The pre cut wall laths will require hole drilling and assembly. Learning these tips, tricks and methods are big time savers because yurt walls are the most popular item that owner builders will choose to make themselves.

May 26th

How to make a yurt doorframe and rafters
1. There is several ways to make a doorframe, each will be discussed. From a simple frame accommodating a canvas flap to a conventional door with weather striping and lockset the door is . Pre cut lumber for a simple doorframe will be assembled to demonstrate the finer details of construction.
2. Rafters are simple to make and are critical to the "Tension and Compression" concept of the yurt design. Cordless and hand tools will be used for this phase rafter construction.

May 27th

Hub
There are several ways to make a simple hub. We will discuss the various methods and materials that can be used for making a hub depending on the tools and equipment available. Pre cut parts will be assembled into a working hub.

May 28th

Canvas covers / break down camp
1. Sewing a canvas requires an industrial sewing machine and so it isn't practical for most to even attempt this. Hands on skills will be part of how to position the canvas on the yurt to cut and glue/sew in the most economical and efficient manner. Traditional alternatives are shown on how to utilize tarps and canvas to cover a yurt frame. Proper fastening of the canvas cover is an important concern.
2. Clean up and break down of camp. Head home.

Want to bring your own tools and materials? Ask and I can send a materials list along with the tools you may need. There will be plenty of time to build most yurt parts for yourself.

Need to purchase material? Ask and I can have what ever you need on hand for this event.
